RE-IMAGINING GEAR IN A CIRCULAR ECONOMY- workshop report

Members of the Blue Circular Economy project recently participated in a an experts panel workshop in Brussels hosted by the North Western Waters Advisory Council (NWWAC) and in conjunction with the Baltic Sea Advisory Council, North Sea Advisory Council and Pelagic Advisory Council.

The Single Use Plastics (SUP) Directive and the Directive on Port Reception Facilities (PRF) helped set the scene for the workshop with expert testimony from a variety of speakers detailing the challenges and opportunities that go hand in hand with implementation of these directives. Among the items discussed were the circularity of gear design, the potential mechanisms for roll out of an Extended Producers Responsibility scheme for gear manufacturers, requirements around monitoring of gear being placed on the market as well as possible solutions for successful management of end of life gear.
